BUSINESS MODEL: PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP
A key feature of the business model of the Institute for Occupational Epidemiology and Risk Assessment (IERA) is the public private partnership between the IERA, with its functional incorporation in Evonik Industries AG, and the Institute and Policlinic for Occupational Medicine, Social Medicine and Social Hygiene of the Clinic of the University of Cologne. This is a win-win situation for both partners. The IERA is operated as a scientifically independent institution at Evonik, and is available to the University of Cologne at no cost, within the framework of the agreed cooperation.
For its part, the University of Cologne provides assistance for the studies carried out by the IERA under the aspect of Independence of Research and Teaching. Moreover, it places the Institute and Polyclinic for Occupational Medicine, Social Medicine and Social Hygiene at the disposal of the IERA, at no cost, as a professional partner and interface for the partnership.
The partnership in occupational epidemiology promotes the scientific advancement of this discipline in research and teaching, and through scientifically established methods, helps resolve issues likely to affect Evonik.
The business model of the IERA is focused on deriving environmental and workplace limits, as well as the classification of substances based on their carcinogenicity. These activities are implemented nationally and internationally by scientifically independent bodies of experts. Because of its university connection, the Institute is an independent, scientific entity with regard to the interpretation of data used to establish limit values and evaluate substances. As such, it is in a position to make complementary, 'high-end' contributions to limit-setting/substance evaluation. It also helps clarify the transferability of the results of animal experiments to humans. At the same time, the Institute offers the opportunity to inject the findings and data acquired within the company into the scientific discussion. The results of these evaluations make an important contribution to evidence-based and designable occupational and environmental safety, and to safe handling of hazardous substances.
The epidemiological expertise of the Institute is particularly important in the areas of health protection, occupational safety, environmental protection, occupational medicine, and product safety and stewardship. For this reason, the IERA has assumed a strategically important role in key activities at Evonik Industries AG.
